One of the most famous games showing the Bishop versus Knight endgame is game number four in the quarterfinals of the candidates match between Robert James Fischer and Mark Taimanov.

Fischer 1971

White to move

Fischer_Taimanov

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Qc7

( The Flohr variation of the Sicilian Defence. This isn’t bad at all, but you may ask why Taimanov didn’t play 4 ...e6 The Taimanov variation. )

5.Nc3 e6 6.g3 a6 7.Bg2 Nf6 8.O-O Nxd4 9.Qxd4 Bc5 10.Bf4 d6 11.Qd2 h6 12.Rad1 e5 13.Be3 Bg4 14.Bxc5 dxc5 15.f3 Be6 16.f4 Rd8 17.Nd5 Bxd5 18.exd5 e4 19.Rfe1 Rxd5 20.Rxe4+ Kd8 21.Qe2 Rxd1+ 22.Qxd1+ Qd7 23.Qxd7+ Kxd7 24.Re5 b6 25.Bf1 a5 26.Bc4 Rf8 27.Kg2 Kd6 28.Kf3 Nd7 29.Re3 Nb8 30.Rd3+ Kc7 31.c3 Nc6 32.Re3 Kd6 33.a4 Ne7 34.h3 Nc6 35.h4 h5 36.Rd3+ Kc7 37.Rd5 f5 38.Rd2 Rf6 39.Re2 Kd7 40.Re3 g6

And now we have reached the most interesting part of this game. I advice to replay and annotate the remaining moves.

41.Bb5 Rd6 42.Ke2 Kd8

This allows White to trade the rooks. Is this a serious mistake (as mentioned by a lot of commentors) or are all the alternatives as bad. In addtion Taimanov was convinced that the resulting endgame was a draw.

43.Rd3 Kc7 44.Rxd6 Kxd6 45.Kd3 Ne7 46.Be8 Kd5 47.Bf7+ Kd6 48.Kc4 Kc6 49.Be8+ Kb7 50.Kb5 Nc8 51.Bc6+ Kc7 52.Bd5 Ne7 53.Bf7 Kb7 54.Bb3 Ka7 55.Bd1 Kb7 56.Bf3+ Kc7

Now White places his King on a6. Since c6 is attacked by the white bishop this makes it impossible for Black to move his king without giving up his pawn. 57.Ka6 Nc8 ( 57… Ng8 58.Bd5 Nf6 59.Bf7 Ne4 60.Bxg6 Nxg3 61.Be8 Ne2 62.Bxh5 Nxf4 63.Bf7 doesn’t help either. ) 58.Bd5 Ne7 59.Bc4 Nc6 60.Bf7 Ne7 61.Be8 Attacking both c6 as well as the pawn on g6 and placing Black in a Zugzwang 61... Kd8

( moves like 61... Nd5?? are very bad 62.Bxg6 Ne7 63.Bxh5 )

62.Bxg6 Nxg6 63.Kxb6 Kd7 64.Kxc5 resulting in this vey nice position. If Black tries to prevent the promotion of the pawns the white king will be able to capture Black pawns on the kingside.

64… Ne7 65.b4 axb4 66.cxb4 Nc8 67.a5 Nd6 68.b5 Ne4+ 69.Kb6 Kc8 70.Kc6 Kb8 71.b6 1-0

The next lesson in this series is about Zugzwang.

  1. Have you thought about writing about this amazing chess prodigy – Hou Yifan.

Hou Yifan (born February 27, 1994, in Xinghua, Taizhou, Jiangsu, China) is a Chinese chess prodigy, who in 2008, became the youngest ever female in history to qualify for the title of Grandmaster, the highest a chess player can attain. In 2007, she became China’s youngest ever National Women’s Champion. In the July 2008 FIDE rating list, she is ranked the strongest girl player and the fourth strongest female player in the world. On September 12, 2008 she became the youngest ever finalist for the Women’s World Championship title.

  2. I may use one of her games in the future, but it has to fit within one of the chess lessons that I am preparing.

Maybe you have a suggestion (?)

  3. You have a great and informative website here. I’m also trying to setup a blog dedicated to chess only at http://chesshive.deuts.net.

I’m not yet sure what should I really write about it, but if i find time and subject and audience, maybe I’ll register a separate domain for it.

By the way, I see that you are hosted at 110mb. So far, how was your experience with this free host?

  4. Success with your blog.

I am very satisfied with 110mb. Whenever something was wrong they managed to solve it within a very reasonable time, which is better than what can be said of most paid hosting services.

  5. It’s wordpress you are using here, right? So you paid for the mysql addon? I wonder, why don’t you register your own domain name? It’s supported here in 100mb, right?

  6. Yes, this site is running on WordPress. To enabe the MySQL Database support costs about $10. The .htaccess is $9 which makes it possible to use the friendly links.

An own domain name is supported ar 110mb, but I haven’t done this (yet). It was not needed to make this site up and running and I am thinking more about chess and chess lessons than about sites.
